This last Friday, I decided to surprise the girls with a last-minute trip to Disneyland. It was spontaneous and a little nuts, but I pulled it off—and we had so much fun. I’ve always wanted to surprise them with a trip like this.
I picked them up from school with our bags packed and ready to go. I put their Minnie Mouse ears and a basket of snacks in the car, and as soon as they got in they immediately asked, “Mom, why do we have this in the car?” That’s when I got to say, “Because… we’re going to Disneyland!!” And then we went.
The drive from Sacramento to Anaheim is long, and leaving in the afternoon meant we didn’t check into our hotel until nearly 10 p.m. But it’s pretty amazing that the girls are a little more sturdy now as “big” kids and can handle a later bedtime once in a while.
The next day, all three of us kept saying, “I can’t believe we’re actually here!!!” It was so much fun. We only did one day and covered both Disneyland and California Adventure, so the girls were on their feet all day long. Long gone are the days of them falling asleep in the stroller while I wander the parks sipping iced coffee. Those days were great (and the stroller was so nice for holding our stuff!), but this phase—with them as 8-year-olds—is really cool, too.
